ACRE Oceans (Southern Africa)

Location, inventory and imaging of historic marine data for ocean and sea areas around Southern Africa.  Data recovered is mostly from British naval vessels permanently moored at places such as Cape Town, Zanzibar, Sierra Leone and Ascension Island.  The period covered is 1844-1912., but coverage differs from one location ot another.  The data are from ships' logbooks held at the UK National Archives, London and the UK National Meteorological Archive, Exeter.  In addition we have added data from ships both naval and mercantile travelling to the Cape, or passing by, on their way to the Far East or to Australia.  Presently the date range for these logbooks is 1816-1900.  Some of these logbooks are from Russian-flagged merchant ships imaged at archives in Finland.  All the logbooks have pressure data and most have temperature observations as well.
